Almost every time I run a consulting work—whether it is on foresight, leadership, or workforce transfusion—the same pattern emerges.
Parents approach me.
Not policymakers. Not universities. Parents.
The conversation usually begins with academic achievements.
“My son is very strong academically.” “She scored 10As in SPM.” “He got 5 A* in IGCSE.” “Straight As in A Levels.”
And then comes the question they believe should logically follow:
Which university should he go to?
This article exists because that question, well-intentioned as it is, is increasingly the wrong starting point.
Academic Excellence Is a Signal, Not a Guarantee
Academic excellence is not the problem. It is a signal.
Yet somewhere along the way, we began treating it as a guarantee.
Many parents still operate with a mental model inherited from our time:
Good grades lead to a good university. A good university leads to a good career. A good career leads to a stable future.
That model no longer holds.

What Changed My Perspective
What reshaped my thinking was not theory, but a pattern I could no longer ignore.
Over the years, I kept encountering highly qualified individuals—graduates of reputable institutions, professionals with impressive credentials—who struggled later in their careers. Not because they lacked intelligence or effort, but because they had never learned how to recalibrate their thinking when the environment changed.
That fragility does not suddenly appear in adulthood. It has much earlier origins.
What Parents Often Don’t See
Across Asia especially, academic performance is frequently equated with future readiness.
But grades reveal very little about how a young person thinks under uncertainty, how they behave when structure disappears, or whether they can learn without being instructed.
In private conversations, away from parents and classrooms, I often hear students say:
I did everything I was told to do. I studied hard. I followed the rules. Now I don’t know what I actually want.
This is not a motivation problem. It is an agency problem.
The Hidden Assumption Universities Make
Modern universities assume a level of cognitive readiness that many school systems no longer cultivate.
They assume self-direction. They assume internal motivation. They assume abstract thinking. They assume comfort with ambiguity.
The gap becomes visible quickly—often in the first year—when assignments are open-ended, time is unstructured, and there is no longer a single correct answer.
For many high-performing students, this is the moment when performance alone stops working.
Shrinking Time Horizons Change the Equation
In a world shaped by AI, automation, and rapid economic shifts, knowledge expires faster than ever.
A degree is no longer a 30- or 40-year asset. In many fields, it carries a relevance window of three to five years, sometimes less.
Four years to complete a degree. Two to three years before parts of that knowledge are overtaken or reshaped.
The margin for error is now extremely thin.
This makes the central question very different from what it used to be.
Not what should my child study, but whether how my child thinks will still be relevant when the world shifts again.
Why This Is More Acute in Asia
This challenge is intensified in many Asian contexts where obedience is rewarded earlier than inquiry, where scores become identity, and where collective expectations quietly override individual curiosity.
The system produces disciplined, capable performers. But independent thinking is often deferred until much later—sometimes too late.
Why I Work in Small Groups
When parents ask me to help guide their children, they often assume it will involve tuition, enrichment, or exam advantage.
It does not.
I work in small groups, usually no more than eight students, because cognition cannot be mass-produced and agency cannot be developed in lecture halls.
This is not about exclusivity. It is about depth.
The work involves cognitive intervention, exposure to foresight, and the gradual reclamation of agency—helping young people understand how they think, how that thinking shapes behaviour, and how to navigate choices before external systems decide for them.
That is why this work sits outside conventional education logic.
Where This Is Heading
I am writing this because I am receiving similar requests from parents across the region who sense that something has changed, even if they cannot yet articulate what it is.
They feel that grades are no longer enough. That universities are no longer guarantees. That careers are no longer linear. That time horizons are collapsing.
They are right.
This is not an education crisis. It is a thinking crisis.
The coming decade will not reward those who chose the “right” university. It will reward those who learned early how to think, unlearn, and reorient themselves without waiting for permission.
That work does not begin at graduation. It begins much earlier—while there is still time to intervene.
If this article causes a pause before asking which university, and instead prompts the question who my child is becoming, then it has served its purpose.
